I want to start dancing but I’m 22 and I have no idea where to start and I have a major self esteem confidence issue that I hope dancing would be able to make me fix.
22? You’re a baby! Seriously, plenty of adults start dancing in their thirties, or even after they retired. Consider yourself having a head start and use it. One of my favorite quotes is this Chinese proverb: “The best time to plant a tree is 20 years ago. The second best time is now.” You’re absolutely right that dance will help you with your self esteem. I’ve found that it’s the epitome of mental, physical, and emotional self care and helps me have a better relationship with my body and spirit.
Where to start? Sign up for beginner classes in whatever styles you want to try. It’s a good idea to consult the internet when you’re shopping around, every class is very different. You can always ask others for recommendations, but be sure to let people know what exactly you’re looking for. Something chill and nurturing? Rigorous technique training? Workout-oriented? Opportunities to perform? Casual/social vibe? I like to look and see what the teacher’s background is, usually that can clue you in to what kind of style you’ll be learning and if it’s right for you. But even if your options are limited, just enroll in your best bet. Some class is better than no class!
Best of luck, and hope this helps!
